- Acorns help boost Soviet Romance

- Release Date 12.11.91
-
- Soviet television viewers are enjoying a Russian version of the popular TV game
- show "Love at First Sight" - and the graphical on-screen images have all been
- made possible by the use of Acorn Archimedes computers.
-
- The show, which is almost a direct translation of the version shown on Sky TV,
- features three boys and three girls who, after a series of questions, have to
- decide whom they would pick for a date. On-screen graphics include, amongst
- others, a "love board", a spray of hearts and the contestants' names.
-
- The software has all been written by Chris Goss of G Graphics who uses a Prisma
- 3 graphics engine controlled by an Archimedes computer. The Prisma unit
- provides broadcast quality genlockable video signals to achieve real time
- animation and video effects. The computer also generates the sound effects
- for the show and controls the button interfaces on the contestants' consoles.
-
- Chris Goss has provided computer graphics and effects for many other television
- game shows using the Archimedes, including "Going for Gold", "Jeopardy",
- "Busman's Holiday", "Connections", "Trivial Pursuits", "The Pyramid Game",
- "One False Move", "Press Your Luck", "Keynotes", "Runway", and so on. Apart
- from his work with British TV companies, he also writes the software for TV
- shows in France, Spain and Scandinavia.
-
- For quiz shows, he uses Acorn's PC Emulator to transfer text files, provided
- by the game show production team, to the Archimedes computer for manipulation
- of the data.
-
- Chris Goss writes most of his software in BBC Basic. "When producers suddenly
- want last minute changes to the effects generated by the computer, which they
- invariably do, it would simply be impracticable to have written the programs
- in 'C', or some other high level language" he said. "The Basic on the 'Arc' is
- comprehensive enough to give me all the facilities I need, and the 'Arc'
- provides all the speed I need."
-
- Similarly, he uses an Archimedes computer because of its ease of use and
- versatility. "I use Acorn machines because of their expansion capabilities,
- and because I can control virtually anything extremely easily" he said. "If I
- had to rely on an ordinary PC, quite apart from the expense involved, it
- would be extremely difficult to control everything I wanted from just the one
- machine."
